PURCHASING A TICKET

The South Shore offers a variety of tickets depending on your travel needs. Our service area is divided into zones and the fare is generally based on distance traveled.

Paying Your Fare
The South Shore accepts cash only on the train. Cash or checks at ticket offices (see check acceptance policy below), except Van Buren Street Station (cash only). You may use Visa or Mastercard when purchasing tickets online.

Metra tickets are not valid on South Shore trains.

One-Way Fare
This is our most common ticket type. It provides passage in one direction between two station stops. One-way tickets may be purchased from ticket agents and are valid for 90 days from date of purchase. You may also purchase a one-way ticket on the train valid only for that trip. We accept cash only on the train.

The South Shore has ticket agents at Randolph St., Van Buren St., Hegewisch, Hammond, East Chicago, Gary, Carroll Ave., and South Bend. Please click here for ticket agent locations and hours. Our ticket agents accept cash or personal checks (no checks at Van Buren).

We assess a $1.00 surcharge for passengers who choose to purchase their ticket on the train after boarding at a station where a ticket agent is on duty.

Conductors will not accept bills greater than $20.

Reduced Fare One-Way Tickets
We offer reduced one-way fares (at least 50% off the normal one-way fare) for:

children 13 years of age or younger,

seniors at least 65 years of age, and

passengers with disabilities displaying a valid NICTD or RTA identification card. Click here to access a pdf version of our application for a NICTD passenger with disabilitiy identification card.

Reduced Fare Identification - When requested, passengers riding on reduced fare tickets must present identification showing they qualify for reduced fare. Passengers unable to provide verifiable identification must pay the full applicable fare.

Weekend/Holiday Fare
The South Shore offers a special promotional fare only when NICTD's weekend/holiday service schedule is in effect (eastbound Trains 601, 505, 507, 509, 511, 513, 515, 517, and 619; and westbound Trains 600, 502, 504, 506, 508, 510, 512, 514, and 516). Valid only on the weekend/holiday in which it is purchased. No further discounting will be applied to this fare. Weekend/holiday tickets may be purchased from agents or on the train (if an agent is not on duty).

Family Fare
We encourage families to take day trips and give their children the opportunity to experience the benefits of train travel. Up to two children 13 years of age or younger ride free with each adult on weekday off-peak and all weekend/holiday trains. An off-peak weekday train is any westbound train scheduled to arrive in Chicago after 9:30 a.m. and any eastbound train scheduled to depart Chicago before 4:00 p.m. and after 6:30 p.m. At all other times children from 2 to 13 years of age must have a reduced fare ticket.

One-way, reduced one-way, and weekend excursion tickets are void if stub is detached from ticket.

Groups
If you are traveling in a group of 10 or more fare paying passengers please call 219-874-4221, extension 245 at least 14 days in advance for special group rates.

Multiple Ride Tickets
We offer 10 and 25-ride punch tickets. These tickets must be purchased from ticket agents. These tickets offer a small discount off the normal one-way adult fare and are valid for one year from the date of purchase.

Reduced Fare 25-Ride Ticket
This reduced fare ticket is available to the same passengers who qualify for our reduced fare one-way ticket.

Reduced fare for youths commuting to accredited elementary and high schools. To qualify for a reduced one-way or 25-ride ticket please contact NICTD or a ticket agent for an application. Tickets must be purchased from a ticket agent. Commuting student tickets are highly restricted, not transferable and good only for travel to and from regular school classes. Tickets will not be honored for evening, Saturday, Sunday, or holiday travel to and from special or off-campus school-related activities.

Monthly Pass
Our monthly pass is deeply discounted and provides unlimited rides to the pass-holder. Monthly passes normally go on sale at ticket offices four business days before the beginning of the month. They are valid for the calendar month identified on the ticket and the inbound trip of the first business day of the following month. Monthly passes can also be purchased through our Ticket-by-Mail (TBM) program. Please click here for a TBM application. Monthly passes are not transferable.

NICTD will not replace lost or stolen tickets.

CHECK ACCEPTANCE POLICY: On board train personnel will ONLY accept cash. Van Buren Station will accept RTA Transit Check but not personal checks. Checks and money orders in the amount of purchase only will be accepted by ticket agents. The check amount must exceed $25. Make check payable to NICTD. Your name and address must be imprinted on the check. Place both home/work phone # and driver's license # on check. Valid photo identification, such as driver's license, must be shown at time of purchase. If address on ID and check do not match, you will be required to show additional identification. Checks will be accepted from IN, IL, and MI ONLY.
