Fares and rules
are governed by tariffs approved by the Northern
Indiana Commuter Transportation District Board of
Trustees and Metra. In case of discrepancy, the
information found in the tariff shall be
considered authoritative. Neither NICTD nor Metra
are responsible for errors in timetables,
inconvenience, or damage resulting from delayed
trains or failure to make connections. Passengers
may be requested, at any time during the journey,
to show proof of purchase of transportation. Please
keep your ticket, ticket receipt, or cash fare
receipt until you have left the train.
SMOKING, RADIOS and
AUDIO PLAYBACK DEVICES (except when used with
earphones) are PROHIBITED aboard all NICTD trains.
Noise from audio device shall not be audible to
other passengers. Please put cell phones and
pagers on vibrate. No standing in
vestibule unless instructed by train personnel.
No stopovers permitted. Abusive, disorderly
conduct or profanity will not be tolerated. Intoxicate or
disruptive passengers may be removed from train. Passengers may not
save seats for other boarding passengers on
crowded trains.
BICYCLES
ARE PROHIBITED (except if disassembled
and carried on board in a bag or container
expressly designed for such purposes and stowed
in the overhead luggage racks).
ANIMALS:
Police dogs, small animals in carry-on cages, and service
animals accompanying either their trainers or passengers with
disabilities are the only
animals permitted on trains. Animals are not permitted to
occupy seats.
BAGGAGE,
briefcases and parcels must be placed in overhead
racks and not on seats. Storage dimensions: luggage

PARKING:
Parking is provided at all stations (South Bend thru Hegewisch).
Some lots fill up quickly on weekdays, especially Hammond, Gary
Metro Center, and 11th St. in Michigan City. Pay parking
ONLY at Hegewisch, Gary Metro Center, and South Bend.

- South Bend Airport provides
several different parking lots and rates. For more

Overnight parking - Overnight parking is
available, except at Hegewisch and Gary Metro Center. We do
not encourage overnight parking in any of our lots.
However, passengers do and always at their own risk. NICTD
assumes no liability for cars parking in its lots.
HOLIDAYS:
Weekend train schedules are in effect on the
official observance of the following holidays:
New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day,
Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
OFF-PEAK
TRAINS: Those weekday eastbound trains
departing Randolph Street Station before 4:00 P.M.
or after 6:30 P.M. and weekday westbound trains
arriving Randolph Street Station after 9:30 A.M.
SURCHARGE:
Passengers purchasing tickets aboard trains will
be assessed a $1.00 surcharge if boarding a train
at a station when a ticket agent is on duty.
Conductors will not accept
bills greater than $20.
MISUNDERSTANDINGS
with agents or conductors with respect to tickets
or cash fares: Please pay the fare requested at
that time, ask for and keep the receipt, then
contact the Manager, Passenger Revenue, NICTD,
503 North Carroll Avenue, Michigan City, IN 46360-5026
with your account of the matter.
INFANTS:
A baby under two (2) years of age carried solely
in the arms or lap of an adult passenger will be
allowed free passage.
CHILDREN
TRAVELING ALONE: Children under 9 years
old will not be accepted for transportation when
traveling alone.
YOUTH FARE:
Passengers thirteen (13) years of age or younger
are eligible for reduced fare travel. Train
personnel reserve the right to request proof of
age from passengers riding at reduced fare under
this policy.
COMMUTING
STUDENT: Reduced fare for youths
commuting to accredited elementary and high
schools. To qualify for reduced one-way or 25-ride ticket please
contact NICTD or a ticket agent for an application.
Tickets must be purchased from a ticket agent. Commuting student
tickets are not transferable and are good only
for travel to and from regular school classes.
Tickets will not be honored for evening, Saturday,
Sunday, or holiday travel to and from special or
off-campus school related activities.
ELDERLY
FARE: Passengers 65 years of age or
older are eligible for reduced fares on all NICTD
trains. To qualify, the passenger must present
proof of age (driver's license, RTA or Medicare
card) at time that transportation is purchased. Seniors
displaying the RTA Reduced Fare Card ride free between Hegewisch
and Chicago.
PASSENGERS
WITH DISABILITIES: All RTA or NICTD
Disability Identification Card and Medicare card
holders are eligible for reduced fares on all
NICTD trains when ID is shown. Contact NICTD for
information and application. For train information in

Services at 800-743-3333.
FAMILY
PLAN: On Saturday, Sunday, Holiday, and
daily off-peak trains, two children thirteen (13)
years of age or younger, when accompanied by a
parent or guardian, will be carried free. Each
adult may be accompanied by two children
traveling free. Additional or unaccompanied
youths will be charged reduced fare. A guardian
must be at least 21 years of age and legally
responsible for the health and well-being of the
passengers. Train personnel reserve the right to
request identification and proof of age from the
accompanying guardian or any passenger riding
free under this policy. Passengers unable to
provide verifiable identification must pay the
full applicable fare.
WEEKEND/HOLIDAY FARE:
Special one-way promotional fare valid only when NICTD's
weekend/holiday service schedule is in effect (eastbound Trains 601,
505, 507, 509, 511, 513, 515, 517, and 619; and westbound Trains
600, 502, 504, 506, 508, 510, 512, 514, and 516). Valid only on weekend/holiday in which it is
purchased. No further
discounting will be applied to this fare.
GROUP RATES: If
you are planning a trip involving a large group (10 or more
fare paying passengers) like a school
function please call for
groups rates 219-874-4221 ext 245 at least 14 days prior to
your date of travel.
MILITARY PERSONNEL:
Active military personnel displaying
appropriate identification may travel free at all times.
MONTHLY
TICKETS ARE FORFEITABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE.
Monthly tickets
are non-transferable and will be good for
transportation only when presented by the
original purchaser.
Monthly ticket will be forfeitable if:
1. Presented for passage by any person other than
the original purchaser, either with or without
knowledge or consent of the person whose
signature is affixed to the ticket.
2. Ticket holder refuses or fails to identify
themselves by signature or other means.
3. Altered in any manner.
VALIDITY
PERIOD: One-way and reduced one-way
tickets are valid for 90 days from the date of
sale. Ten ride, 25-ride, and reduced 25-ride
tickets are valid for one year from date of sale.
Monthly tickets are valid for the month for which
they are issued and until noon on the first
business day of the following month. One-way, reduced
one-way, and weekend excursion tickets are void if stub is
detached from ticket.
LOST OR
STOLEN TICKETS WILL NOT BE REPLACED
REDEMPTION:
Unused tickets offered for redemption must be
mailed or surrendered to a NICTD ticket agent no
later than the first weekday (excluding holidays)
following the expiration limit of the ticket to
retain any redemption value.
Refunds for Monthly Tickets will be based on when
ticket is surrender to NICTD. Any value will be
calculated using the 25-ride pro-rated cost.
Typically monthly tickets lose any refund value
after the 15th business day of the month.
Multiple Ride unused tickets, or portions thereof, will be
redeemed on the basis of the difference between the one-way fare
for each ride used and the amount originally paid for the
ticket.
CHECK
ACCEPTANCE POLICY: On board train
personnel will ONLY accept cash. Van
Buren Station will accept RTA Transit Check but
not personal checks. Checks and money
orders in the amount of purchase only will be
accepted by ticket agents. The check amount must
exceed $25. Make check payable to NICTD. Your
name and address must be imprinted on the check.
Place both home/work phone # and driver's license
# on check. Valid photo identification, such as
driver's license, must be shown at time of
purchase. If address on ID and check do not match,
you will be required to show additional
identification. Checks will be accepted from IN,
IL, and MI ONLY.
RTA
TRANSIT CHECK: Inquire if your employer
participates in the RTA's Transit Check program.
Transit Check enables your employer to pay up all or part of your monthly train fare as a non-taxable
benefit to you! New features also enable you to
have all or part of your monthly train fare deducted pre-tax from your
paycheck to help cover your monthly commuting
cost. Check with the RTA for details.
LOST AND
FOUND: Please make certain you have your belongings
before leaving South Shore stations and trains. NICTD is
not responsible for lost or stolen items. NICTD will
immediately discard containers with perishable items.
After 30 days NICTD will dispose of all unclaimed items.
Items must be claimed at either Randolph St. Station or Carroll
Ave. Station. Please call 219-874-4221 x205 and leave a
message concerning a lost item.
